A Mardi Gras theme comes to the First Congregational Church on Feb. 7, as the church celebrates its annual Jazz Sunday. Youth of the church will also be collecting non-perishable food items for the Souper Bowl of Caring, to benefit the church’s and other local food banks.

Music for the morning’s worship services will be provided by the Catoonah Street Jazz and Blues Society, led by church member Greg Zaic.

The church’s senior minister, Dr. Charles Hambrick-Stowe, will speak on the significance of the transfiguration of Christ for life today in his sermon, His Face Shone.

Ash Wednesday follows on Feb. 10, beginning the season of Lent. Ash Wednesday worship will be held in the church’s sanctuary at 7 p.m., with the sacrament of Holy Communion and, following the dismissal, the imposition of ashes for those who wish to receive this personal blessing.

Lenten meditative worship will take place every Wednesday until Holy Week.

Worship is at 8:30 and 10 on Sunday mornings. For information: firstcongregational.com or 203-438-8077.
