Author Elissa Altman will be at the Ridgefield Library on Monday, Nov. 16 at 7.p.m. to talk about her new release, Poor Man’s Feast: A Story of Comfort, Desire and the Art of Simple Cooking.

Altman was born and raised in New York City, to a food-phobic mother and a food fanatical father who taught her that fancy cuisine is always the best. While her mother avoided and distrusted food, her father filled her childhood with dinners at every upscale establishment in the City, from Le Pavillon to La Grenouille. Elissa devoted her life to all things gastronomical, even serving rare game birds at dinner elaborate parties.

In Poor Man’s Feast Altman expands on her award-winning blog of the same name and shares her upbringing as a foodie, focusing on only the finest dishes — until she met a small-town Connecticut Yankee named Susan whose devotion to simple living and simple food changed her perspective on both food and in life. Susan did not need a meal to be fancy and encouraged Altman to explore other ways of preparing, eating, and appreciating food. The book is a story of finding sustenance and peace in a world with unlimited excess and inauthenticity.

This program is co-sponsored by Books on the Common and copies of Poor Man’s Feast will be available for sale and signing at the event. To register and for information, ridgefieldlibrary.org and call 203-438-2282.
