Jack Maguire
John T. Maguire IV, of Ridgefield, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 after a courageous two and a half year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Known as Jack to all, he lived in the wonderful Mimosa community in Ridgefield with his wife, Mary Flynn-Maguire, and their three children, Jack, Brigid, and Patrick for the last 26 years.
A third generation NYC police officer, Jack was born in Brooklyn, New York and was the son of the late John T. III, and Veronica (Haffey) Maguire.
1987 was a big year for Jack and his family. He retired as a detective from the NYPD and moved his family from Riverdale in the Bronx to Ridgefield.
“This was the best move we ever made.” Jack was often quoted as saying. He loved everything about Ridgefield and his beautiful parish of St. Mary’s.
Jack was a veteran of the Vietnam era having served two years of active duty in Adak, Alaska, and retired from the United States Navy in 1987 attaining the rank of Petty Officer First Class. Most importantly, Jack and Mary’s third child, Patrick Flynn Maguire, was born in 1987.
After a twenty year career with the NYPD, Jack continued to be of service to people and joined the New York Foundling Hospital, founded by the Sisters of Charity at the time of the Civil War to care for the orphans of New York City. Jack served as the director of security and in other capacities, as well, and visited all their group homes in the five boroughs and Rockland and Westchester Counties. He knew and loved all the children and workers at each location.
Jack had many interests and loves. First and foremost was his family. He was a very religious man and was thrilled that his children were able to receive a Catholic education and attend Our Lady of Fatima Elementary School and Immaculate High School. He was very proud of their accomplishments and the colleges they attended but, more importantly, the people they have become and the values they hold.
He gladly welcomed a wonderful son- in- law, Timothy Rice, into the fold in 2010. Jack was best of friends with his brothers-in-law and met his wife of 35 years, Mary, through them.
Jack had a great sense of humor and was truly young at heart. He was a lover of all types of music and his imitations of Mick Jagger will be remembered by all, especially his nephews, Richie, Brendan, and Ian who meant all the world to him. He loved all his nieces and nephews both in America and Ireland.
Jack’s cooking skills were legendary and truly a gourmet at heart, time meant nothing to him. The presentation of the meal was as important as the meal and many a great feast was served well into the late evening.
Jack was also a Steelers fan who loved attending home games in Pittsburgh and arguing with the diehard Jets and Giant fans in his family.
Jack’s artistic talents evidenced themselves in his cooking but most especially in his decorating. His home meant everything to him and decorating it tastefully and beautifully was always very important. Jack had an eye for detail and quality and frequently came home with “finds” from the dump which, using his carpentry and artistic talents, would be given new life.
Jack attended the Farmingdale schools when his family moved to Long Island in 1954 and later graduated from John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
He is survived by his sister Deidre (Richard) Happ and the late Patricia Maguire; aunt and uncle Evelyn and Matthew Brady; nephews Richard (Stacey) Brooks, Ian (Amanda) Happ and the late Brendan Brooks and Daniel Griffin.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, September 9, 2013 at 10:15 AM in St. Mary Church, Ridgefield and burial followed in St. Mary Cemetery with military honors.
Jack’s family wishes to share their appreciation for all the great work of the doctors, nurses and staff at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital but most especially to his oncologist Dr. William Sherman, of the Pancreatic Center. We can’t thank him enough for his tireless dedication to his patients and to the field of pancreatic cancer research.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lustgarten Foundation for pancreatic cancer research would be appreciated: www.lustgarten.org
