Tavern games … it’s Friday

Taverns were centers of social life in Colonial communities. Townspeople and travelers would stop in at a tavern for a drink or something to eat, hold business meetings, get the latest local and national news, meet with friends, and play games. The games played in Colonial taverns were controversial, not because of the games themselves but because of the gambling that was often associated with them.

Games were similar throughout the colonies and in England. Cards were the most popular, played in public rooms and at private parties. Games of strength and skill, such as fist fighting or target shooting, were also popular among male tavern patrons. There were also tabletop games, like Skittles or Shove Ha’penny. If outdoor space was available, games such as quoits, similar to horseshoes, or cricket could be played. Nine-pins, an early bowling game, could be played in a side alley.

Keeler Tavern Museum is bringing back the sociality of the Colonial tavern with a monthly family game night. Learn a new game or play an old favorite. Drop in at the Garden House at your leisure to play board games, card games and tavern games. Bring your favorite game or a deck of cards, or try one of the museum’s tavern games. TGIF will be held on the last Friday of each month; upcoming dates are March 25, April 29 and May 27. For more information, email info@keelertavernmuseum.org or call 203-438-5485.
