The Ridgefield Library’s World Views series continues on Thursday, March 31, at 7 p.m., with a program called Faces Behind the Headlines that will take a closer look at the refugee crisis unfolding in Western Europe. The program is presented by a filmmaking duo who have been documenting the issue on Lesbos Island, Greece, a major entry point where nearly a million people entered the European Union in 2015.
Gus Ford, a Redding freelance photographer, and Irina Patkanian, an award-winning filmmaker, will offer a firsthand account of the crisis. Using video footage, audio clips, still photography, and discarded items from the shore, they will focus on the human side of the crisis and talk about things that usually get overlooked in news reports.
“We talked with hundreds of people landing on the shores of Western Europe for the first time. It was an experience I’ll never forget. I’m hoping that by putting a human face on the story, people will have a better understanding of the crisis,” Ford said.
Selected photographs from Ford’s series “Faces Behind the Headlines” will also be on display.
Ford is a freelance photographer and videographer with a studio in Redding Center.
Patkanian is a filmmaker, Fulbright fellow, and professor of film production at CUNY, and the president of “In Parenthesis,” a New York City-based nonprofit film and theater company.
