Emily A. Nixon 64, a 40 year resident of Chicago, IL. died on Thursday March 10, 2016 in Ridgefield, CT surrounded by her family after a valiant battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her husband, Dean Langworthy. Emily was born in San Antonio, Texas to the late Stanley W. and Grace (Bishop) Nixon. Growing up, Emily and her family resided in Grinnell, Iowa where she attended local schools. Emily received her bachelor’s degree from Wheaton College (Wheaton, Illinois) and then went on to Tucson College (Arizona) for her master’s degree.
Emily’s passion for art carved her considerable professional path. She began her career at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, where she was an assistant Art professor. From there she moved into the corporate art world, working as an Associate Curator at Continental Bank. Emily went on to found Nixon Art Associates in 1987. From there, she was able to provide high-level art advisory and art collection management services to major corporations and private collectors in the Chicago area as well as across the country. She was widely known and respected for her expertise and passion for art collecting. Beyond those considerable skills, her creativity in exhibition design and her unwavering commitment to providing exceptional service for all of her clients further distinguished her.
Emily unselfishly shared her considerable talents and expertise with many art related organizations. She served as a Board Member/Executive Committee member at the Loyola University Museum of Art, was a Founding Member of the Association of Corporate Art Curators, was an Advisory Board Member for Chicago’s Artist’s Month, a member of the International Association for Professional Art Advisors, and founder of Collections Solutions, Inc. She also found time to serve various charitable art organizations such as Gallery 37 and Sculpture Chicago.
Emily’s professional passion and accomplishments were complemented by her love of opera and the symphony, which she attended regularly throughout her life.
Emily was predeceased by her brother Stanley and is survived by sisters, Beverly Lyon and her husband, Dan of Ridgefield, CT and Barbara Brewer and her husband, Paul of Simsbury, CT, as well as nieces, Kate and Leah and nephews, Kyle, Chris and Mark.
A Memorial Service will take place at Loyola University on Friday, May 6, 2016 at 10:00am located at Lewis Towers, 111 East Pearson, Chicago, IL 60611
