The 1941 mystery garden. — Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Gardens, J. Horace McFarland Co. Collection
The Ridgefield Garden Club wants to identify a 1941 Ridgefield garden that’s in the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Gardens.
Club member Terry McManus, chair of the Garden History and Design committee, said the club is working with the Smithsonian Institution to identify and document noteworthy current and past gardens for possible inclusion in the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Gardens, as well as to help identify “mystery gardens,” for which it has slides but no further information.
The current information is limited to the fact that the photo is from Ridgefield, Conn., dates to June 21, 1944, and shows a “perennial border” with “tsuga hedge” under remarks, evidently referring to the row of hemlock on the right edge of the photo.
The photograph is part of the Smithsonian’s J. Horace McFarland Co. Collection.
McManus can be reached at tamcman@sbcglobal.net or 203-894-1668.
