The luck of the Irish descended upon the town’s golfers March 17 when the Ridgefield Golf Course opened on St. Patrick’s Day.
The course usually opens in April, but the the warmest winter on record and the sultry days it brought meant opening early was too good to pass up.
“Yes, it’s interesting because last year we opened the latest ever, because of all that snow last winter,” said Whit Campbell, the pro shop manager, who said last year’s opening date was April 15.
The ground was solid enough for electric golf carts to be used. A good crowd came out for first day, and found improvements to the 14th hole, with trees removed so that balls don’t get lost in the woods and slow down play.
Was it too soon though? Some forecasts calls for snow Sunday night through Monday.
“If it snows Sunday night, we’ll just have to close until the snow melts,” Campbell said.
The golf course is at 545 Ridgebury Road
Posted starting hours are Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 a.m. and Thursday and Friday at 8 a.m.
