The town needs people.

Six town agencies have vacancies the Board of Selectmen is trying to fill.

The selectmen are looking for citizens willing to serve on the Conservation Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, the Parking Authority, the Board of Ethics, the Prevention Council, or the Historic District Commission.

Duties of the Conservation Commission include: oversight of town open space including trail maintenance, posting and protecting; advising Planning and Zoning and Inland Wetlands on the impact of development to the environment; working to increase the town’s inventory of open space through acquisition and encouraging donations. The commission meets every other Monday night at 7:30, and members also attend occasional Friday morning site walks and Tuesday night planning and zoning meetings on a rotating basis.

Duties of the Parks and Recreation Commission include: the maintenance of a comprehensive recreational program; oversight of all park properties including a system of regulations, permits and fees for recreational and park uses; appointment and oversight of a full-time superintendent and such other staff as needed.  Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation Center.

The Parking Authority is a five member agency that oversees the town’s parking, with the ability to establish rules and regualtions for the parking of motor vehciles in town, to lay out pakring areas, and to levy fines for parking violations.

The town’s Board of Ethics deals with complaints of ethics violations against town officials and employees. Although some members appointed to the ethics board have been lawyers, others named to the commission have simply been citizens with reputations for fairness and integrity. The board of ethics meets quarterly, the second Wednesday of every third month at 7:30 p.m., and sometimes has special meetings when there is a specific matter to deal with.

Several vacancies exist on the Ridgefield Prevention Council, a volunteer agency that works to inform and educate the community to in an effort to prevent and reduce high-risk behaviors — such as drug and alcohol abuse, but also others — among the population, particularly young people. Meetings are held once a month on the third Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

The Historic District Commission is seeking someone interested in the historic preservation of the buildings in the Historic District of Ridgefield. The vacancy is for an alternate position. A person with background in architecture would be a great asset to the commission, but this is not a requirement. Meetings are held every third Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m.

Anyone interested in any of these vacancies should contact the first selectman office at (203) 431-2774 or selectman@ridgefieldct.org.
