Janet Marie Kalriess, 85, in public service

Janet Marie Kalriess of Ridgefield died on Monday evening, Jan. 25, at Danbury Hospital, with her family surrounding her. She was 85.

She is survived by her three sons and their spouses, William and his wife Barbara, Richard and his wife Sandra, Ted and his wife Debbie; nine grandchildren, Lauren, Mark, Cara, Kristi, Julia, Ryan, Melissa, Michael and Kimberly, and two great-grandchildren, McClain and Jonas.

Born in New York, April 15, 1930, the daughter of the late Frank and Marguerite Moccairo, she was raised in Staten Island, N.Y., graduating from Tottenville High School with the class of 1948.

After high school she went to work in Manhattan as an administrative assistant at Mutual Life Insurance, before marrying and starting a family in Staten Island. She was later chairman of the Great Kills Thrift Shop from 1964 to 1984. She later moved to Aberdeen and Lakewood Township, N.J. where she served as the president of the first aid squad of her community and enjoyed offering rides to seniors no longer able to drive.

She is remembered by her family and friends as an artistic, bright, and spirited person who was a patron of the arts, an enthusiastic self-taught painter, an avid gardener, and an explorer of new ideas and places. She leaves behind a legacy of public service and a generosity of the heart.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, March 5, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Parish, 376 Maple Place, Keyport, New Jersey.

Interment will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Janet Kalriess Memorial Fund, benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association.
