Monica Housen

Ridgefield High School mathematics teacher Monica Housen has written a book about her Fulbright year in Hungary. Published by Sense Publishers and available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, Our International Education: Stories of Living, Teaching, and Parenting Abroad is co-written with two other Fulbright scholar/teachers.

In 2011, Housen accepted a one-year Fulbright grant to teach math in Hungary, exchanging her job and her home with a Hungarian teacher. Her co-authors, Sherry Marx and Christine Tapu, were likewise granted teaching positions in different towns in the country. Each woman’s family accompanied her, and they enrolled their children in local Hungarian elementary schools, though none of them spoke the language.

Over the course of the adventure, the three women weave together the personal and professional dimensions of life abroad. The stories that make up Our International Education go into the realities of negotiating work, school, and family life in another country, and also the complexities of cultural adjustment and second language acquisition.
