The Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority, in partnership with Winters Brothers, New England Compost Danbury, the Towns of Ridgefield and Newtown are proud to offer a sustainable program for a greener tomorrow, food scrap recycling.

Residents can sign-up at www.hrra.org.

The Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority in collaboration with the Town of Ridgefield and the Town of Newtown will be kicking-off the first of its kind organics collection programs in the state of Connecticut at Newtown’s transfer station at 9am and Ridgefield’s recycling center at 10 am on Saturday, Nov. 14, America Recycles Day.

Both programs will have a kick-off event that will explain the program and answer any questions from residents about separating their organics from the waste stream.

Residents who have signed up for the program will receive a free collection kit including kitchen collection bin, six months of compostable bags, carry container, educational material and more.

Residents from Ridgefield will bring their organic waste to the Recycling Center on South Street in Ridgefield as often as they would like and tip their six gallon container for $3.  The fee covers the cost of transportation from the recycling center to New England Compost in Danbury and the tip for processing the material into compost.  Currently Ridgefield residents pay $5 to bring their household trash to the transfer station.  By removing organic material from their trash residents can use the transfer station less often, saving money each week, paying only $3 to rid themselves of the smelliest and heaviest material in the trash.

Residents of Newtown may dispose of their organic material at the transfer station on Ethan Allen Road at no fee.  The food scraps collected in Newtown will also be sent to New England Compost.

Participating residents from both towns will receive compost in the spring as part of the program.
