Firefighters were at East Ridge Middle School pumping water out of the building Wednesday.

Water that possibly came from a community garden outside East Ridge Middle School got into a utility service tunnel that runs beneath the building early Sept. 2.

There appeared to be no active leak and no broken pipe, but water somehow got into the service tunnel and was noticed at 7:30 a.m., said Joseph Morits, facilities manager of the school district.

A team of Fire Department volunteers used electric pumps to remove the water.

By nearly 10 a.m., they were still pumping.

Heating pipes run through the tunnel, Morits said.
