There has been much controversy and discussion recently about the need for and safety of childhood immunizations. It is sometimes difficult to discern fact from fiction and to evaluate the benefits and risks associated with various vaccines. To help parents better understand the many aspects of childhood immunizations and the immune system, RVNA and Ridgefield Library are co-sponsoring a program on Saturday, Aug. 22, at 3 p.m. at Ridgefield Library.
Three speakers will participate in the presentation.
Dr. Steven Novella is an assistant professor of neurology at Yale School of Medicine where he is active in both clinical research and medical education. He will discuss myths and facts about childhood immunizations. Mary Ellen Porrata, MSN, APRN is the community health and wellness nurse manager at RVNA. She oversees RVNA’s immunization program in addition to the Well Child clinic and Travel Health clinic. She will address Connecticut vaccination requirements and the state’s vaccination exemption process. The third presenter is RVNA’s staff nutritionist, Sandra Novella, MS, RD-N, CD-N. She has more than 25 years of experience providing counseling for individuals and groups in the areas of general nutritional wellness, weight management and nutritional therapy. She will discuss strategies for maximizing the immune system through nutrition.
