Robert “Chance” Browne, comic strip illustrator, painter, and musician, will exhibit his comic and fine art at the Ridgefield Library’s Gallery on the lower level through Aug. 28, with an artist’s reception on Saturday, Aug. 8, from 2 to 4.
This exhibit is titled Outside the Box: Chance Browne’s Comic and Fine Art. The show’s title refers to Browne’s longtime day job as a cartoon illustrator — and how liberating other art forms
have been for him.
Drawing comics involves staying inside boxes. Outside the Box will include a selection of Browne’s original Hi and Lois illustrations. For Browne, though, painting, sketching, doodling and building remove the rigid guidelines of cartooning.
The eldest son of the late cartoonist Dik Browne (Hagar the Horrible, Hi and Lois), Chance grew up in Wilton, in a home full of humor, warmth and lots of art supplies. He attended The New York School of Visual Arts and studied painting at Park College in Missouri. From there, moving to Harvard Square then to Burlington, Vt., in the late 1970s, Browne broadened his artistic scope as a graphic artist, ad-agency jingle writer/musician and studio player. He has served as president of the family’s company, Browne Creative Enterprises Inc., since 1989, while illustrating Hi and Lois and editing material for Hagar the Horrible.
Browne continues to play music gigs in addition to making fine art. He and his photographer wife Debra live in Wilton with a small menagerie. Their three adult daughters have inherited their parents’ artistic and musical talents. For more information visit ridgefieldlibrary.org or call 203-438-2282.
