“Puppies for sale” – a Web-search phrase used by those looking to introduce a furry companion into their lives.
But adopting a shelter puppy is a far better choice. Here are five good reasons why:
• Save a life. Three to four million unwanted dogs and cats are put down yearly.
• Get a healthy pet. Pet store puppies are commodities, often coming from puppy mills whose animals are sickly and poorly cared for. Shelter dogs have been spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, heartworm tested and given age-appropriate vaccinations.
• Save money. The adoption fee covers the medical expenses for the services above.
• Gain a lifetime of loyalty. Rescue dogs tend to be loyal and loving when given a second chance by a kind owner or loving family.
• Set a good example. You’ll teach your children, family members and friends the value of offering second chances.
Meet ROAR pup Levi, an adorable five-month-old male Aussie Cattle Dog (aka Blue Heeler) mix. This breed is known to be intelligent, active, resourceful, alert, protective and medium in stature. Levi’s adoption fee is $350.
The ROAR Donofrio Family Animal Shelter is at 45 South Street, or go to www.roar-ridgefield.org to learn more about Levi and all our adoptable dogs and cats.
A big thank-you to Lyn and staff at Buddhi Mat Power Yoga. Power for Paws was a body-warming evening.
