7th Annual Sunset 5k to benefit Sunrise Cottage
To celebrate 26 years in operation, Southwest Café at 109 Danbury Road is sponsoring the 7th Annual Sunset 5k on Saturday, Aug. 3.
Race starts at 7 p.m. and will conclude with a margarita for every participant (21 and over). There are t-shirts for the first 150 registrants and prizes for top three male and female runners with additional prizes for top three runners by age groups. Cost is $25 if registered before July 31 and $28 after July 31. Participants can get 15% off dinner that evening. The race is open to all age groups.
Proceeds will go to Ridgefield Sunrise Cottage, a home to six developmentally disabled adults. The Cottage has been operating eight years as a group home, providing comfortable independent living for the residents. It is located in a neighborhood setting close to the community center of Ridgefield.
Race sponsors include Hamlet Hub, Doyle Coffin Architecture, Reynolds and Rowella, the Stockel Family Foundation, and Bring ‘n Buy.

Boehringer sponsors Born Learning Trail
Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is sponsoring the new Born Learning Trail located at Rogers Park Playground and Spray Park in Danbury. The trail was installed by more than a dozen Boehringer volunteers as part of their Day of Action project on June 6.
“Boehringer Ingelheim is pleased to support children learning about the world around them through our employee installation of the Born Learning Trail,” said Ann Wainright, associate director of Corporate Social Responsibility at Boehringer Ingelheim. “This is one example of how our company fulfills its commitment to strengthen our local communities and make more health.”
The trail consists of 10 activity signs encouraging young children to get active and have fun, while boosting language and literacy skills. Families can connect with community resources, register for the free Imagination Library book program, and enjoy water and healthy snacks.
Rogers Park Playground and Spray Park are free and open to residents of all communities.
Jill Maguire named a financial advisor
Jill Maguire has been named a financial advisor at Reby Advisors in Danbury.
Ms. Maguire is a certified financial planner with more than 10 years experience in advising families, business owners, and organizations.
She is a graduate of the University of Connecticut and is a past president and the current membership chair of the Ridgefield Rotary Club. She was past chair of the Ridgefield Chamber of Commerce and was formerly on the board of the Ridgefield Community Center, and the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra. She also served on the Parish Advisory Council at St. Elizabeth Seton church.
In her leisure time she enjoys reading, cooking, hiking, and spending time with her family and friends.
Computer classes in Continuing Education
Microsoft Office skills are being taught in Ridgefield Continuing Education.
Classes include Using Social Networks (July 26; 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. or Aug. 3; 10 to noon), eBay (July 30 and Aug. 6; 1 to 3 p.m.), iPad (July 19; 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. or Aug. 3; 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.), and Pinterest ( July 25; 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.).
Tutoring is also available. Cost is $44 (two hour), $81 (four hour) or $99 (five hour) class, plus $2 to $6 for materials in some classes.

Nursery school has a few spots
My Nursery School has a few spots left for the 2013-2014 school year.
“My Nursery School is designed to provide a continuous educational experience for each child, to promote his innate curiosity, and to help him learn to value himself as well as others,” said Lindsay Brown of the school.
“Each program has been created to encourage an interest in learning and to provide a gradual transition into the public school systems.”
Two to five day programs with an extended day option are offered.

The Hickories offers art on the farm
A few classes are left in The Hickories Art on the Farm 2013 summer series.
Photography and field sketching classes are designed for artists and art students to further develop artistic eye using the farm’s animals, plants and landscapes.
Dr. Jean Linville, a local photographer, artist, writer, and arts educator, will be providing guidance, using a variety of artistic mediums and subjects.
Additionally, participants in any of the sessions will have the opportunity to submit work to a fall exhibition at The Hickories.
