The Ridgefield police received reports of 33 tax fraud incidents over the month from March 20 to April 20, five days after the IRS tax filing deadline.
“The complainants were made aware after being rejected when attempting to file their taxes,” said Capt. Jeff Kreitz, the Ridgefield Police Department’s public information officer.
“The fraudster will use the victim’s Social Security number and file the taxes in the victim’s name in order to get the refund,” Kreitz said. “The IRS will electronically send the refund to the account listed.”
