Sentencing for Dr. David Lester Johnston, an osteopathic doctor in Ridgefield who in January pled guilty to health care fraud, is now scheduled for June 30, according to Thomas Carson at the United States attorney’s office for Connecticut.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Johnston admitted to scheming to defraud Medicare and several private health insurance companies. The scheme involved submitting claims for osteopathic and physical therapy services he did not perform, and misrepresenting the nature of services that were performed.
As part of the resolution of the case, Johnston agreed to enter into a civil settlement with the government and pay $270,528 in federal civil claims.
In March 2014, Johnston, operator of Osteopathic Wellness Center LLC at 158 Danbury Road, was charged with 14 counts of health care fraud and making false statements relating to health care matters, stemming from incidents that went from 2009 to 2012.
Sentencing by U.S. District Court Judge Robert Chatigny had been scheduled for April 10 but was postponed.
The matter was investigated by the inspector general of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Christopher Mattei, Heather Cherry and Richard Molot.
