Orthopedic firm adds less invasive type of knee operation

Danbury Orthopedics, whose staff includes a number of Ridgefield doctors, recently added partial knee replacements as an offering.

A spokesman for the firm said that when possible the partial knee replacement is a less invasive option for patients than total replacement, which can require a hospital stay and a lengthy rehabilitation period.

The firm recently opened an outpatient surgical center — officially known as the Western Connecticut Orthopedic Surgical Center — at 226 White Street in Danbury.

Ridgefield doctors at Danbury Orthopedics include Dr. Michael Brand, president of the group, Dr. John Dunleavy, Dr. Angelo Ciminiello, and Dr. Philip Mulieri.

Patients whose knee deterioration is primarily isolated to one part of the joint may be candidates for a partial knee replacement, a spokesman for the group said. Because the partial procedure involves less tissue damage than a total replacement, recoveries are generally faster. Also, in part because no ligaments are removed, many patients say their post-surgical knee feels and functions more normally.
