What’s So Great about The Great Gatsby? This question will be answered in a lecture at the Ridgefield Library on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. Mark Schenker, dean of academic affairs in Yale College, lectures on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece by placing it in the context of its historical moment — it was published in 1925 — and in the broader context of the American Dream.
Dr. Schenker has been at Yale College since 1990. He is currently a senior associate dean of the college and dean of academic affairs. A former lecturer in the English department, he received his doctor of philosophy degree from Columbia University. He has lectured on literature and film and has led book discussion series in public libraries and other venues in Connecticut for more than 25 years. Dr. Schenker will present a second lecture, World War I and American Literary Modernism, on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m.
This program is part of Ridgefield’s Big Read of The Great Gatsby. Book discussions, programs and events relating to The Great Gatsby will take place throughout Ridgefield in October and November.
