The school district passed a random audit of its special education department’s files.

The district was chosen by the state in April to submit information from 25 student files for a special education audit, and was ruled in compliance with federal disability legislation, according to a letter from the state’s bureau of special education.

Assistant Superintendent of Special Services Karen Berasi brought the letter to the Board of Education Monday night as administrators and educators breathed a collective sigh of relief over the fact that the district was compliant with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

“This is very good news,” said Superintendent Deborah Low, holding up the one-page letter from Mr. Brown.

“If we didn’t comply, then it’d be a lot thicker than this,” she joked.

In addition to the student file review process, the Bureau of Data Collection, Research and Evaluation and the Bureau of Student Assessment each conducted respective “desk audits” of the district.

“Desk audits have to do with files, not money,” Ms. Berasi told the board.

“We’re timely and accurate in what we send in monthly and that goes a long way,” she said. “This is a celebration for everyone in the special education department — we do a great job with the kids and the paperwork.”
