Members and friends of the First Congregational Church will worship in the church’s social hall for four Sundays starting Aug. 10, as the sanctuary undergoes renovation.
The sanctuary renovation project includes refinishing of hardwood floors, installation of new carpeting in the entrance and center aisle, polishing all pews and other woodwork, new pew cushions, and a remodeled lavatory.
The worship space in the 1888 church building has undergone similar refurbishing every 20 to 30 years since the mid-20th century. Much of the work will be undertaken by Artech Church Interiors Inc., a Ridgefield-based company that specializes in church restoration.
During August, Lund Hall will be furnished as a chapel, with pews, lectern, Communion table, grand piano, candles, and other articles of worship. The worship schedule will remain unchanged, with services at 8:30 and 10 a.m. every Sunday. The informal West Lane Worship contemporary service is held monthly, next scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16, at 5 p.m.
The work this summer is part of the church’s larger master plan for the maintenance and development of its facilities, which will include major new construction that is expected to begin next year.
Visitors are always welcome at the First Congregational Church, located by the fountain at the intersection of Main Street and West Lane in Ridgefield. Worship is at 8:30 and 10 on Sunday mornings.
