Jason McKinnon, principal of Branchville Elementary School, announced he will step down from his position at the end of the school year Friday morning.
Dr. McKinnon, who became principal at Branchville in 2005, will take over as the assistant superintendent for New Fairfield Public School next year.
“Dr. McKinnon’s strong instructional leadership, particularly in the area of literacy and higher-order thinking, has benefited Ridgefield students over the past nine years,” said superintendent Deborah Low in a press release. “His warmth, compassion, and sense of humor are the foundation for the positive and enthusiastic school climate at BES.
“Although his departure is a great loss, we congratulate Dr. McKinnon and wish him much success in his new position.”
Known for his Australian accent and choice of socks, Dr. McKinnon was remembered by Ms. Low for his “unique style.”
“Dr. McKinnon is well-loved and respected by all at BES and throughout the district,” Ms. Low said.
In a letter to parents, Dr. McKinnon recalled watching whole families move up from grade to grade and eventually graduate from Branchville.
He also remembered welcoming first-year teachers to the school and thanking veterans ones as they made their way into retirement.
“It has always been a bittersweet transition, but one which I valued immensely,” he wrote. “Thank you for allowing me the privilege of teaching your children. It is truly a gift I will take with me on my next venture, a touchstone that I will keep in my pocket and will always look back on with deep gratitude and a smile.”
Dr. McKinnon’s resignation will be effective June 30, Ms. Low said.
She added the search process for a new principal will start in the next couple of weeks. With Ms. Low retiring at the end of the year, the district is now charged with filling two administrative positions for next year.
