Simon White of Ridgefield has invented a device called the Tick Band, which is meant to repel tricks. It is a line of stretchable ankle sheathes infused with permethrin.
“This would be particularly beneficial in preventing Lyme disease, the most common tick-borne disease. The Tick Band would be safe for both adults and children to use, and could also be used for pets,” Mr. White said. He added that televised test marketing has recently been completed and indicates strong consumer interest in the Tick Band.
The main ingredient in the Tick Band — permethrin — is a common synthetic chemical that serves as a pesticide. It can kill ticks on contact with treated clothing, Mr. White said. He said it is the chemical approved by the Food and Drug Administration to be safe for direct contact with the skin.
