Charter revision. It’s the process that gave Ridgefield four-year selectmen’s terms, made the Water Pollution Control Authority independent, and created the Board of Selectmen’s annual “non-binding recommendation” on the school budget. And, it’s starting again.

“The last charter revision was approved in 2010 and we are required to review it every four years per the current charter,” First Selectman Rudy Marconi said Monday.

The Board of Selectmen will have discussion of forming a Charter Revision Commission on the agenda of its next scheduled meeting, Wednesday, Sept. 18, starting early at 6:30 in town hall’s lower level conference room.

A press release from Mr. Marconi’s office seeks volunteers for the effort:

“The Board of Selectmen is seeking experienced, dedicated and qualified professionals to serve on a seven-member Charter Revision Commission.

“Applicants should be familiar with the current Town Charter and have time to commit to the commission.

“Commission members will be responsible for examining the Charter of the Town of Ridgefield, contacting various agencies and departments of the town, and conducting several public hearings. The Charter Revision Commission will submit changes to the Board of Selectmen.”

People interested in serving on the charter commission may contact the First Selectman’s office at (203) 431-2774 or selectman@ridgefieldct.org.

Participating in the charter revision process “is a great way to learn about how our town operates,” Mr. Marconi said.
