Woman’s Club members Karen Heidinger and Joan Stefura hold a few of the 200 comfort pillows sewn by the club for Danbury Hospital.
Reinventing an old custom, the community sewing bee, 25 members of the Ridgefield Woman’s Club gathered at the Recreation Center recently to stuff and stitch more than 200 “comfort pillows,” in a 21st Century adaptation of a colonial tradition.
The pillows are destined for the Praxair Cancer Center at Danbury Hospital and will be given to patients recovering from breast or other surgeries.
Club members Karen Heidinger and Joan Stefura managed the program and enlisted the help of members to sew the pillows at home.
A note tucked into each pillow expresses the hope that as much comfort may come from using the pillow as by knowing that other women care about the patient and acknowledge post-surgical needs.
More information on the club is available from Bernice Ponte at 203-438-6108.
