After threatening to protest against actor Lillo Brancato’s anti-drug abuse talk at the Ridgefield Playhouse — because Brancato was involved in a robbery that led to police officer’s murder — John McNicholas did not appear at the event Wednesday night, March 23.
But McNicholas, a former New York City detective who has lived in Ridgefield for years and taken public stands on a variety of issues, said later that he believed his protest — on Facebook and in The Press — had done its job.
“I made the point on Brancato,” McNicholas said Monday, March 28. “Point made.”
Brancato’s talk had been framed as a cautionary tale of the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse, and included a first-person account of how his addiction led to a felony murder charge. He wasn’t convicted but did nearly 10 years in prison on a lesser charge — after an accomplice in a drug-motivated burglary shot and killed a New York City police officer.
The talk was co-sponsored by the Ridgefield Prevention Council and two rehabilitation institutions, Silver Hill Hospital and Newport Academy.
