Breann Dick
Breann Dick, a senior at Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts in Richmond, Va., recently started her own company, designing, making, and selling handmade bags and accessories. She launched the company in September 2015, and sells at several brick-and-mortar shops as well as online at Etsy.com.
“Bags by Breann started my sophomore year of college, when I entered a competition involving VCU Arts and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA). Our goal was to create a product for the VMFA gift shop inspired by a piece in their permanent collection. I selected a buckle in the art nouveau section from the 20th Century because I was fascinated by the free-flowing lines and organic shapes that made this delicate piece of jewelry. After having chosen such an inspiring piece, I decided that I wanted to make this kind of art accessible to everyone by putting it on everyday items,” she said.
“After selecting the buckle, I first had to decide where I wanted to put the image. I contemplated a number of products and finally came up with the idea of putting it on a bag. The first few steps were simple — I made a sketch, outlined it and moved it into a computer program called Illustrator. Once I was able to manipulate the image, this project took off faster than I ever expected. I found that I was able to modify it with a world of colors and patterns to create unique and amazing designs. As I continued, I realized that the options for Bags by Breann were limitless, and my business continues to grow today as I expand into more channels and stores,” she said.
