Donald Edwin Healey, resident of Ridgefield and Brewster, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, passed away on February 19, 2016 after a brief illness. Don was 84 years old.
Born in Providence, RI, Don attended high school at LaSalle Academy in Providence on a four year scholarship. He was an exceptional student, honor roll recipient and gifted track athlete during his time at LaSalle. After graduating high school in 1949, Don attended Providence College and was a member of the Dean’s List every semester through his graduation in 1953. He also served in the US Naval Reserve during this time and was honorably discharged with the rank of 2nd Class Petty Officer in 1956.
After graduating from Providence College with a degree in Accounting, Don worked for several firms within the Accounting arena. In 1963, his employer, National Retail Distributions, sent him to the coveted ‘IBM Academy’ to learn about IBM Machine Accounting. This foray into Information Processing eventually led him to numerous Management and Executive jobs within the Information Technology field, including jobs with ICI America, EDS and most recently, as Senior Vice President of Operations and Technology for Centerbank (now Wells Fargo) in Waterbury from 1972 to 1995.
Outside of work, Don was also active on numerous committees and associations including Chairman of the Board of Easter Seals of Central Connecticut, President of the State of Connecticut Savings Bank Association, member of the Economic Development Commission in the Town of Ridgefield, and President and Treasurer of the Ocean Edge Homeowners Association – Ocean Edge Resort in Brewster, Cape Cod, MA. He was also a member of St Mary’s and Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Ridgefield for 52 years.
Don was an avid runner for 50 years and continued to play tennis three days a week up until his 84th birthday. One of his favorite places on earth was his second home at Ocean Edge Resort in Brewster, Cape Cod where he enjoyed many of the activities the Cape had to offer. He also spent numerous winters during his retirement years with his wife Mary in Medira Beach, Florida. He loved socializing with friends and family in and around Connecticut, Cape Cod and Florida. Don was a humble and compassionate man who was respected by all for his integrity, intelligence and gracious manner.
Don is survived by his wife of 61 years, the love of his life, Mary, his children Kathy of Danbury, CT, Mike (Mary Ellen) of Southbury, CT, daughter-in-law Margaret of Woodbridge, VA and grandchildren Michael, Matthew and Katelyn. He was predeceased in 2012 by his beloved son Tim.
Funeral arrangements are private and at the direction of the family. Kane Funeral Home, Ridgefield is in charge of arrangements.
