Podcasts keep growing in popularity because they’re great for storytelling and easy to consume in our on-the-go lifestyle. Boehringer Ingelheim has created a three-part podcast series, “Skills-based Volunteerism: Moving the Needle,” to showcase one of the ways they are strengthening Connecticut communities and encourage other employers to get involved.
Boehringer Ingelheim supports skills-based volunteerism by providing opportunities for employees to donate their skills and professional expertise to local nonprofits, helping them fill unmet needs. It’s one of the core programs of the Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation and one that’s grown organically.
“We’ve seen first-hand the benefits of skill-based volunteerism for our communities and our employees. Nonprofits with limited budgets value the donated time and skills of our employees, as they don’t have to incur the costs associated with these services,” said Lilly Ackley, president, Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation.
“Boehringer Ingelheim employees have the opportunity for professional development through applying their skills to new challenges, and they also bring great insights back to the company.”
Boehringer Ingelheim employees have run the gamut for how they have contributed their skills to nonprofits, like Doug Grevatt, who is a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight Northeast. Doug provides free air travel to patients who can’t afford or can’t tolerate commercial flights to get them to the medical treatments that they need.
“Through the podcast, Boehringer Ingelheim wants to encourage other corporations to develop skills-based volunteering programs,” said Ackley. The episodes share our secrets of success.”
Last year, more than 600 employees participated in approximately 125 projects, providing more than $600,000 in skills-based services.
