The intersection of Arch Street and Soundview Avenue in Greenwich is closed as of 9 a.m. Saturday and will be closed for an extended time after a bus crash there.
The Greenwich Fire Department reported that the CT Transit bus smashed through several utility poles. A photo tweeted by the Greenwich Fire Department shows the bus sideways against a splintered pole, the back of the bus smashed against a tree and sitting atop a stone wall.
One person was taken to the hospital, according to Greenwich Police.
According to the Eversource website, 178 homes in business in Greenwich are without power.
The outage in Greenwich is due to the bus colliding with one of Eversource’s utility poles. The bus was evacuated by the time Eversource arrived. Frank Poirot of Eversource said at 9:35 Saturday morning that it expected most of the 178 customers to be restored in the next 30 to 40 minutes. But 33 customers closest to the crash will take until at least noon if not longer because Eversource has to replace a whole pole.
The crash came as a blizzard blew onto the coast of Southwestern Connecticut. Greenwich is among the towns directly on the Long Island shore that are included in the blizzard warning.
The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for southern Fairfield and New Haven counties until 7 a.m. Sunday.
A blizzard warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. The National Weather Service warns that falling and blowing snow could cause whiteout conditions with zero visibility, making travel extremely dangerous. Snowfall totals of 8 to 12 inches are possible in the blizzard warning area.
