You can still make resolutions

Did you make New Year’s resolutions? There is still time to identify things you’d like to change or improve upon in 2016. Resolutions are fun to make but difficult to maintain. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-lined. We recommend focusing on good health and preventing injury and illness. Here are some resolutions that are worthwhile: Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and cut back on processed food. Make your home safer by clearing walkways of clutter, improving lighting, securing or removing small rugs, and getting a Lifeline medical alert device. Get outside and enjoy fresh air and sunlight. Try a new activity like a walking group, chair exercise or yoga. De-stress using meditation or mindful breathing, both of which can lower blood pressure and improve sleep. Keep your mind engaged and active with puzzles, a book group, or brain games or by learning a new language. Volunteer your time and talents, which often increases your own sense of well-being. Stay in touch or reconnect with family and friends, since research shows that people with strong social ties live longer. Schedule an annual physical to help in prevention and early detection of illness and disease. Finally, get more sleep to boost mood, lessen risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes and strengthen memory. Any one of these will get you on a healthier path in 2016 and is well worth the effort!
