Route 35 construction delayed again

Not so fast on that one-way traffic on Danbury Road.

The state Department of Transportation has once again postponed bridge construction work on Route 35.

The work was to have begun Monday, Jan. 18, causing one-way alternating traffic for the heavily traveled road, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. There were a couple of delays during the fall, and, as of Friday afternoon, now another.

The Police Department was not notified of the reason for the delay, or when the work will actually begin. The department was simply put on notice that its overtime officers were no longer required.

A DOT engineer said the latest day is because a sewer line was found to be in a location other than the one shown in the plans. This complicates the temporary bypass road, because the pipe must not be damaged.

A way must be found to keep the sewer line safe while work goes on, said John Dunham, district engineer for the DOT. The delay could be a couple of weeks, possibly more. Protective measures must be taken for the sewer pipe because it is old.

The general project is to replace the bridge on Route 35 near the Fox Hill condominiums. The project is scheduled to be complete in the spring of 2017.
