Jamie Ogle Shafer
Jamie Shafer, a longtime and active Ridgefielder, died on Jan. 9 at Danbury Hospital surrounded by family. She had been in declining health with COPD and pneumonia. She was 84.
Born June 9, 1931 in Evanston, Ill., she was predeceased by her husband Allen Osborne Shafer, who died in 2004, and her eldest son Frank, who died at the age of 12 in 1969.
Survivors include her son Thomas O. Shafer, daughter-in-law Sherry, and grandchildren Paige and Alexei of Seattle, Wash.; her daughter Sarah Wetherby, son-in-law Tom, and grandchildren Rebecca, Francis and Christopher of Raleigh, N.C., and son Nathan B. Shafer of Golden, Col.
Shafer attended Wellesley College and Parsons School of Design but was largely self-educated. She was politically active in the Republican Party of Fairfield County as a young mother, volunteering as a “Goldwater Girl” during the campaign of 1964. Besides raising her family, one of her most satisfying accomplishments was her and her husband’s restoration of a Colonial-era house, built in 1730. Restoration of the house began in 1964 with an addition built in 1980, and the restored and furnished house was subsequently featured on home tours. In later years, she and her husband traveled the world, with visits through Europe and the Middle East.She also devoted many hours to genealogical research and digital restoration of family photos, teaching herself to be an expert in Adobe Photoshop in the process.A memorial service will be held at the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield, on Friday, Jan. 15, at 5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ridgefield Historical Society.
