The Ridgefield Library is offering technology programs during Computer Science Education Week, Dec. 7-13. Ridgefield Public Schools will also be taking part in one of the core elements, Hour of Code — hands-on computer programming for K-8 students.
Kimberly Sauter, a Ridgefield computer scientist who has worked closely with the library to put the program together, said, “Learning to code develops problem-solving skills and teaches logical thinking and will spark an interest to learn more in a field that will touch almost all careers in the future.”
Programs include:
- You’re Never Too Old to Code, for seniors, on Monday, Dec. 7, 1 to 2 p.m.
- Bee-Bots Introduction to Programming, for ages 4 and 5, Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2 to 2:45 p.m.
- Bee-Bots Introduction to Programming, for grades K to 2, Wednesday, Dec. 9, 4:30 to 5:15 p.m.
- Instrument Making With Scratch and Makey Makeys, for grades 4 through 8, Wednesday, Dec. 9, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
- Parents Learn to Code, for adults, Wednesday, Dec. 9, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
- Parents Learn to Code, for adults, Thursday, Dec. 10, 10 to 11 a.m.
- Build Your Own Candy Dispensing Machine With Legos, for grades 3 through 5, Friday, Dec. 11, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Dec. 12, from 1 to 4 p.m., the library will host a coding showcase of technology displays and other programs, including demonstrations by the library’s Girls Who Code, Robotics and Makers Meet-Up groups.
Participants in the Random Hacks of Kindness Junior one-day hackathon in early December will be on hand to explain the prototype apps they have developed for local nonprofit organizations. Students and teachers from Ridgefield public schools, Ridgefield Academy and Wooster School will also show off the work they have been doing. There will be demonstrations of the library’s 3D printers and other maker technologies.
The program is supported by the Donofrio family and the Ridgefield Education Foundation. For a full listing of the week’s activities and to register: ridgefieldlibrary.org or 203-438-2282.
