Lindsay Rubin, a former longtime Ridgefielder, has started Lou Rou, a line of accessories for women.

Lou Rou is a New York City-based label that “makes modern accessories for a woman who appreciates quality materials but prefers simple silhouettes,” said Rubin.

Founded in 2014 by Rubin, 24, the brand is set to launch a new line of clutches and card cases, with free monogramming.

Rubin decided to start Lou Rou after graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2013 with a degree in fashion merchandising.

“After seeing a gap in the market between low-priced, fast fashion accessories and ultra-luxe expensive goods,” she said, she decided to make a few bags for herself and her friends. She found “an overwhelming demand to produce in a larger scale,” so she launched her first line of accessories on online retailer Etsy. In just a few months, Rubin sold through all of her inventory.

“The core focus of the label is the beautiful Italian vegetable-tanned leather, with details of novelty materials in classic, crisp silhouettes,” she said. In addition to the three bag variations, she is including unisex card cases to accompany the collection.

“For the rare moments I’m not speaking, I like my accessories to do it for me,” she said. “I love the idea of items that tell a story and spark a conversation, which is why the materials are the focus of the collection. The vegetable-tanned leather is interesting because it ages with you. With more wear, it gains character and speaks for itself.”

Rubin also works at Schwartz & Benjamin, where she does footwear production for Kate Spade. More information, lourounewyork.com.
