PR-SCH-New-music-11.19.JPGA group of volunteers has formed an organization to assist, support and enhance the instrumental music programs at Ridgefield High School. Ridgefield Music Matters will be a 501(c)(3) registered non-profit organization, comprised primarily of RHS band and orchestra parents, that will encourage, promote and foster the musical experiences of RHS students.

“It’s such a thrill to have the support of parents and community,” said Michael McNamara, music director at RHS. “Enthusiastic parents foster enthusiastic kids, and Ridgefield Music Matters will help music students receive the encouragement and recognition they deserve.”

Reinforcing the benefits of music education through active parental involvement shows students that you’re respectful and supportive of the issues and subjects they care about, said McNamara, known by his students as “Mr. Mac.”

Members of RMM will provide support to the musical director with programming, concerts and off-site opportunities, as well as assist in event promotion and publicity. In addition, RMM will raise funds to provide items and services that cannot be reasonably covered by the Ridgefield school budget. To that end, the organization has created a line of “spirit wear” designed to promote and proudly display one’s support of RHS music.

“Music is an integral part of who these kids are,” said Maureen Chakraborty, president of RMM.  “The creation of Ridgefield Music Matters applauds their efforts, and heralds our commitment to music education, to our children and to the community.”

Mr. Mac agrees. “We have an incredible amount of musical talent in Ridgefield,” he said. “These kids work very hard, and deserve the support and encouragement of their peers and parents. It’s great to now have an organization to publicly reinforce that support.”

According to the organization bylaws, all parents of current students enrolled in RHS instrumental courses are considered active members of RMM. There is no membership fee, and active members receive one vote on all matters for which there is a motion to vote. Associate members, who do not have voting privileges, include all students currently enrolled in the instrumental program, student alumni, RHS faculty, and members of the Ridgefield community who wish to foster the purpose of the organization.

“We want our kids to feel like they are a part of a community, and something bigger than themselves,” said Mr. Mac. “We want them to feel at home here, and RMM will help convey that message.”
