William T. Gnewuch, 85, of Brookfield; formerly of Ridgefield, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2015. He was the loving husband of the late Nancy (Powden) Gnewuch.
William was born on May 27, 1930 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; a son of the late Charles and Bernice (Rogers) Gnewuch.
After serving as a Merchant Mariner on the Great Lakes and later as a US Army Corporal in post-war Europe, he attended Marquette University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree. He then went on to receive a Masters in Biology from Duke University; and eventually his Ph.D. in Marine Biology from The University of New Hampshire in 1969. William was a Professor of Marine Biology at Sacred Heart University for 31 years before retiring in 2004.
Prior to relocating to Brookfield, William resided in Ridgefield for nearly 35 years. During his time in Ridgefield, he was a member of the Ridgefield Men’s Ice Hockey League and he drove the zamboni at the Ridgefield Ice Rink.
He is survived by his daughter, Heather Gnewuch and her husband Kevin Roth, of Redding. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Ruby Powden Roth.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, September 12 at 2:00 PM at the First Congregational Church of Ridgefield; 103 Main Street, Ridgefield.
Interment will be private; there will be no calling hours.
