The 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act being signed into law is Sunday, July 26, and the Prospector Theater is celebrating.
On the actual anniversary, Sunday, the theater will screen the documentary When Billy Broke His Head… And Other Tales of Wonder on at 10 a.m.
And Friday and Saturday evenings, starting at 5, The Prospector will have free Special Olympics celebrations.
Friday’s will include open mic Special Olympics stories, and Prospector Productions: Special Olympics and Me.
Saturday’s celebrations will include games, photos with Special Olympians, and a “watch-along” of the Special Olympics World Games opening ceremonies.
“That’s going to be right in our lobby and we’re going to have special events and games,” said The Prospector’s Ian Foss. “It’s going to be fun. All demographics are going to be able to come in and play.”
When Billy Broke His Head… And Other Tales of Wonder is a 1995 biographic documentary written, directed and staring Billy Gofus. It is billed as “a video first-person road movie about disability, civil rights and the search for intelligent life after brain damage.”
There is a $25 suggested donation for the showing at The Prospector Sunday morning.
“It’s a unique insight, looking at a person’s struggle with brain injury, and being labeled as disabled,” said Foss.
“It’s from his point of view, and it documents his road to recovery and kind of finding his stride in his new life.”
The Prospector Theater on Prospect Street in Ridgefield’s village is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that serves as a model of integrated, competitive employment and vocational training for persons with disabilities through the operation of a first-run, premium movie theater.
