Evelyn Witkind Bernstein, formerly of Ridgefield, CT, died peacefully on June 19 at the age of 92. Ms. Bernstein and her family moved to Ridgefield in 1956. Her husband, Fabian Bernstein, died in 1962. She never remarried.
Evelyn Bernstein was born in 1922 in Union Bridge, MD. Upon retirement from the Ridgefield school system, where she was a physical education teacher, she moved to Tucson, AZ, and then, in 2008, to Mitchellville, MD.
Her three children, Deborah, Judith, and Jared all attended and graduated from Ridgefield public schools. Deborah now resides in Florida with her husband, Jim Cowden, a Ridgefield native, while Judith (married to Andy Gaeta, also of Ridgefield) and Jared live in the Washington, DC area.
Ms. Bernstein grew up in the New York City area. She attended Hunter College where she studied education. Until her later years, she was active in sports (tennis, skiing, biking) and taught dance and yoga in the Ridgefield area. She was an avid reader and a political advocate for liberal causes. While living in Ridgefield, she was a member of the Unitarian Church.
During her years at the Collington Retirement Community in Maryland she led a highly active social life and was an active community member, participating in the bocce league, art and exercise classes, and the flower committee.
