Maurice Sendak Day is celebrated by state

Children’s author and 40-year Ridgefield resident the late Maurice Sendak was honored this week as Wednesday, June 10, his birthday, was declared Maurice Sendak Day in Connecticut.

“Maurice Sendak’s legacy lives on through the countless lives that he has touched through his tremendous contributions to the arts,” Gov. Dannel Malloy said in an official statement declaring the day.

The governor’s declaration was made at the suggestion of the Town of Ridgefield, which had received a request to do so, First Selectman Rudy Marconi said Tuesday.

He also said that at his request the student interns working for his office had made a display of Sendak’s books and memorabilia in the case by the public meeting room in town hall’s lower level.

The governor’s proclamation said, in part:

“Whereas, Maurice Sendak was born on June 10, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York to Jewish immigrant parents; and

“Whereas, Maurice Sendak went on to become one of the most beloved children’s book writers and illustrators of the 20th Century; and

“Whereas Maurice Sendak’s works include Kenny’s Window, Very Far Away, The Sign on Rosie’s Door, In the Night Kitchen, and most notably, Where the Wild Things are; and…

“Whereas Maurice Sendak earned a multitude of awards and accolades for his work, including the 1964 Caldecott Medal for ‘the most distinguished American picture book for children,’ the Hans Christian Andersen Award for children’s book illustration, and the National Medal of Arts in recognition of his contributions to the arts in America; and

“Whereas Maurice Sendak resided in Ridgefield, Connecticut, from 1972 until his death in 2012; and

“Whereas, Maurice Sendak’s legacy lives on through the countless lives that he has touched through his tremendous contributions to the arts; now

“Therefore, I, Dannel P. Malloy, governor of the State of Connecticut, do hereby proclaim June 10, 2015, as Maurice Sendak Day in the State of Connecticut.”
