Tax collections are running at their highest since before the Great Recession.
“Collections are actually better than ever,” said Tax Collector Jane Beresden-Hill.
The total budgeted amount she is supposed to collect, which was due May 1, was $121 million. By Monday she had about 98% of that.
She sent out several hundred delinquent notices last week, in hope of collecting money due.
Real estate pays the bulk of taxes. Automobile taxes and personal property of business owners fills in the rest.
Beresden-Hill was planning to the tell the Board of Finance about the situation at a recent meeting.
“We’re doing fine with current year taxes,” she said.
The Connecticut Conference of Municipalities could not be reached to determine if there is a pattern among other towns.
