Dr. Robert L. Kleinberg, a former Ridgefield resident, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering in Washington, D.C., for work he did while living in town.

Kleinberg, who is a Schlumberger fellow of Schlumberger-Doll Research in Cambridge, Mass., was elected for his contributions to formation evaluation and development of pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance logging, a spokesman for the academy said in a statement.

Kleinberg was a Ridgefield resident from 1980 to 2006 before moving with Schlumberger to the Boston area in 2006.

He was an active community member while in town, one of the founding members of ROSA, where his efforts contributed to the preservation of open space to create Bennett’s Pond State Park.

He also served on the town Charter Revision Committee.

Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education, including significant contributions to the engineering literature.

Members are also cited for pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, and developing innovative approaches to engineering education.

The academy picked 67 members and 12 foreign members.

Kleinberg, reached by phone in Cambridge, said it is a big honor for him.

“I was a bit surprised I was dredged up from the bottom of the barrel, but I’m grateful to whoever it was that nominated me,” he said of the secret election process.
