What better to honor those who fought for the nation than to put American flags on veterans’ graves?
With more than 800 graves of local veterans to decorate with flags, Ridgefield’s American Legion is looking for help.
The American Legion’s annual grave decorating detail will be on May 22, the Friday evening before Memorial Day.
“There are over 800 flags that need to be placed on the veterans’ graves that evening,” the American Legion said.
“This is a huge task and the American Legion relies on help from all the scouts: cub, girl, boy and brownies as well as volunteer residents from the town. All are invited to lend a hand.”
All volunteers should report to the American Legion Hall on North Salem Road, near the intersection of New Street, and across from cemetery, on Friday evening May 22 by 6 p.m.
After a very brief instruction on the proper placement of the flags volunteers will be disperse into the cemeteries.
In the cemetery Legionnaires will be stationed around as informational guides.
The Legion suggests volunteers bring a large screwdriver or a tool to make a guide hole for the placement of the flags.
“With enough hands this task is usually completed in an hours’ time,” the Legion said. “We look forward to another good turnout.”
