An elderly woman who suffered from smoke inhalation and other injuries from a fire Thursday night at 15 Cook Close, in Casagmo, has been moved from Danbury Hospital to the Bridgeport Hospital Burn Unit.

Bridgeport Hospital is the only burn unit in the state, according to the hospital’s web site. It also has a helicopter landing pad for Lifestar medical helicopters.

The Ridgefield woman was air-lifted to Bridgeport overnight, said First Selectman Rudy Marconi. Her son, who suffered injuries trying to rescue her, was brought by ambulance to Brideport Hosital from Danbury Hospital, also overnight.

As of 5 a.m., they remained in critical condition, Marconi said.

Meanwhile, the Fire Marshal and other officials continued their investigation into the cause of the blaze,  said Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Myers.

The investigation is delayed because officials need to speak with the people who lived in the damaged unit, said Fire Marshal David Lathrop.

Those people are being treated in the burn unit and the fire marshal is waiting for approval from the hospital to speak with them.

The fire was reported at 6:49 p.m., with heavy smoke visible from the street and people inside the burning building.

Firefighters went into the building to rescue people who were transported to the hospital.

By 7:38 p.m., the fire was under control.

The fire was contained to one unit of a building at Cook Close. The Red Cross was on standby to help people burned out of their homes to find accommodations,  but that was not necessary, Marconi said. He said several neighbors were either able to work out accommodations with family close by or return to their unit.

“There was substantial damage to one unit,” Marconi said.
