Friday, April 24, is Arbor Day and Eversource Energy is urging customers to plan before they plant. Trees are the number one cause of power outages, and planting the right tree in the right place now can help reduce the risk of future damage to the electric grid.

“Each year, we trim trees growing near power lines to reduce the number of tree-related outages and improve service reliability,” said Sean Redding, manager of vegetation management at Eversource. “As Arbor Day approaches, we want to remind our customers to consider how the trees they plant now may affect the reliability of their electric service later.”

When planting trees near roadside power lines, Eversource recommends low-growing trees such as crabapple and dogwood varieties. Medium-sized trees growing to heights of 25 to 45 feet, like arborvitae and flowering cherry trees, can be planted between 15 and 30 feet from power lines. Large trees, like oak, maple and pines that reach heights of more than 45 feet, should be planted at least 30 feet from the lines.
