Zoners continue subdivision talk

Flooding concerns and landscape changes are holding up a proposal for a two-lot re-subdivision at 262 Wilton Road East that would create four lots to be served by relocated access way.

Two members of the public spoke at a hearing last week before the Planning and Zoning Commission motioned to continue the application’s hearing until April 7.

“We have additional questions about the flooding that haven’t been answered here tonight,” said Meta Ela, who lives across the street from the proposed site at 253 Wilton Road East.

“The topography is a real challenge, and that’s a significant concern of ours,” added David Ela, her husband.

“It’s already on a steep grade, and we’re not sure how an additional house would impact the water flow of the river that’s part of the neighborhood.”

Attorney Robert Jewell presented the project to the commission for about 45 minutes before the public spoke, but the absence of engineer Frank Fowler led Chairwoman Rebecca Mucchetti to agree that a continuance was necessary.

“We’ve been working on this application for a year; I don’t see why we can’t wait another few weeks,” Mr. Jewell said.

The couple who spoke also raised concerns about the plan’s proposal to cut down trees in the neighborhood in order to relocate the accessway that would serve the four lots.

“We’re not confident with the engineering plans presented tonight,” Ms. Ela said.

“We feel that it’s not a good site to build on to begin with, and if anything, this proposal puts the neighborhood more at risk,” she said. “It could really change the landscape of the street.”
