A 47-foot tower on the former Elms Inn property will be demolished and replaced with a 40.5-foot replica structure during a redevelopment project that will create 16 residential units on the site.
The Planning and Zoning Commission approved a special permit request for the new tower Tuesday night.
“The applicant was prepared to move the tower, but couldn’t do so safely,” said attorney Robert Jewell. “The plan now is to demolish the tower and create something that is more structurally sound.”
The new tower will conform with the town’s permitted height within the zone, which is 45 feet, said Town Planner Betty Brosius.
Commissioner John Katz moved to approve the proposal before the presentation was even made. After Mr. Jewell submitted his brief comments to the record, commissioner Joe Fossi seconded the motion and the planners passed it unanimously.
