Growing art at the Aldrich

Families are invited to investigate Michael Joo’s geology-inspired exhibition at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and discover the beauty in nature and stones at a Crystal Creations workshop.

On Sunday, April 27, from 3 to 5, participants in the museum’s Family Makers series will explore the galleries with museum educators, learning about local landscapes, and then build an environment to grow colorful crystals with everyday materials, taking home their creations to watch them transform over time.

Joo’s exhibition Drift, created specifically for the Aldrich, connects the interior of the museum to the surrounding landscape, via the artist’s impression of Cameron’s Line, an ancient fault line that traces the edge of the continental collision that initiated the formation of the Appalachian Mountains. The line, which runs from New York City and passes through Ridgefield on its way north, is defined by a belt of marble that includes the famous quarries of Vermont.

The workshop is $15 for Aldrich family-level members and above and $20 for nonmembers (both prices include a caregiver and one child aged 8 and up). For more information, contact Michelle Friedman, youth and family programs coordinator, at mfriedman@aldrichart.org or 203-438-4519. The Aldrich is at 258 Main Street.
